OPENING SOON

The Wilbur and Charlotte Courter Memory Center was created as a division of the Comstock Community Center to help the population of people who experience Alzheimer’s or Dementia. The concept was first thought of in 2018. The Memory Center is named after the Community Center’s founders, Wilbur and Charlotte Courter.

The Memory Center is a great option for seniors who are living at home with family members and require assistance throughout the day. The Memory Center will provide services like medication management, as well as meal and entertainment options. The goal of the Center is to improve, and then maintain the quality of life of those individuals who utilize it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Adult day centers provide socialization, stimulation and supervision for older adults with cognitive impairments. Unlike nursing homes or assisted living facilities, adult day centers only provide care during the day. Adult day centers provide a place where families can drop off their loved ones and receive some respite time to take care of themselves and run day-to-day errands.

Courter Memory Center welcomes older adults who are experiencing cognitive changes such as Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. A comprehensive assessment is completed prior to enrollment to ensure that the day center can serve the needs of each individual guest.

Our guests are welcome to spend all day with us at the center or come for a few hours. We can offer a light breakfast, lunch meal through Milestone Senior Services (additional charge; covered by some insurances) as well as daily snacks.

Courter Memory Center will assist guests and families set up transportation through Metro Connect. These rides are an additional charge of $3-4 dollars each way. Families are also welcome to drop off their loved ones if this is a more convenient option.

There will be a wide variety of activities for our guests. We will have one exercise class a day and then a physical activity such as cornhole, seated volleyball, and washers. There will be music activities, sing-a-longs, boomwhackers, guess the tune, and karaoke. We will do arts and crafts like painting, coloring, knitting, crochet, and maybe even some that involve food. Trivia and famous faces trivia are great for mental stimulation. Reminiscing activities are a great way to bring someone back to their younger years. There will be plenty of board games and card games to play and some video games as well. As we start to learn more about our guests, we will know what they like doing and what they dislike. We know some people can be social all day while others might need a break. We will have quiet activities ready for our guest who need a break

While Courter Memory Center is *not* a locked facility, staff members are trained to get to the root cause of agitation, often leading to the ability to redirect guests before unsafe situations arise. Please note that we are not equipped to assist guests with active exit-seeking behaviors. Center staff are also trained in CPR and First Aid.

All staff at Courter Memory Center are trained in Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care. Teepa Snow is a leading dementia educator who utilizes a strengths-based method of care to interact individuals at differing disease stages. Many of our care partners also have extensive experience working in nursing homes and memory care facilities.

All Courter Memory Center staff are CPR and First Aid certified. In the event of an emergency, 911 would be contacted as well as the guest’s emergency contact.

A few key benefits would be socialization, stimulation, and joy! Socialization is important to all humans. It helps one to not feel alone and depressed. They are able to spend time with their peers and enjoy the moment. Laughing, talking about the good ole days. Adult day services are stimulating in all ways. Playing games that challenge their minds, like trivia and scrabble. Arts and crafts to keep those creative juices flowing and to express themselves. Doing fitness activities to get their blood flowing and to help promote independence. Being a part of an adult day center will bring them joy! Making new friends, playing games, learning about new things, and smiling while participating.
